TRINITY IN HEBREWS
Table of Contents
In this post I will be quoting the places in Hebrews where OT texts about YHWH are applied to both the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. This will affirm that to the inspired writer YHWH God isn’t singular Person, but is in reality a Tri-Personal Being who eternally exists as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
I begin with the Person of Christ.
YHWH
“Because of him each of his messengers succeeds, and by his word all things hold together.” Sirach 43:26 New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVUE)
“Do Not Hide Your Face from Me A Prayer of the afflicted when he is faint and pours out his complaint before Yahweh. O Yahweh, hear my prayer! And let my cry for help come to You… But You, O Yahweh, abide forever, And the remembrance of Your name from generation to generation… Of old You founded the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. Even they will perish, but You will remain; And all of them will wear out like a garment; Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not come to an end.” Psalm 102:1, 12, 25-27
“In the beginning thou, O Lord (Kyrie), didst lay the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands. They shall perish, but thou remainest: and [they all] shall wax old as a garment; and as a vesture shalt thou fold them, and they shall be changed. 28 But thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.” Psalm 101:26-28 LXX
JESUS CHRIST
“In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe through him. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word…” Hebrews 1:2-3a (CSB)
“But to the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God (ho theos), endures forever and ever. You rule with a scepter of justice… He also says to the Son, ‘In the beginning, Lord (Kyrie), you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands. They will perish, but you remain forever. They will wear out like old clothing. You will fold them up like a cloak and discard them like old clothing. But you are always the same; you will live forever.”” Hebrews 1:8a, 10-12 New Living Translation (NLT)
YHWH
Deuteronomy 32:43 is an unusual verse in view of its contents. As the list of variant readings shows, 4QDeut-supported by the Septuagint-differs markedly from the Masoretic Text and the Samaritan Pentateuch. For example, in the Qumran scroll it is “the heavens” which rejoice, not the nations; and God will avenge the blood of “his sons,” not “his servants.” Moreover, the mention of gods “bowing down to God” and “recompensing those who hate him” is absent from the Masoretic Text and the Samaritan Pentateuch. This verse provides a striking example of the very different readings that sometimes appear in the Dead Sea Scrolls…
Rejoice, O heavens, together with him, and bow down to him all you gods, for he will avenge the blood of his sons, and will render vengeance to his enemies, and will recompense those who hate him and will atone for the land of his people. (Martin G. Abegg, Jr., Peter Flint, & Eugene Ulrich, Dead Sea Scrolls Bible: The Oldest Known Bible Translated for the First Time into English, pp. 192, 193; bold emphasis mine)
“Rejoice, ye heavens, with him, and let all the angels of God worship him (kai proskynesatosan auto angeloi theou); rejoice ye Gentiles, with his people, and let all the sons of God strengthen themselves in him; for he will avenge the blood of his sons, and he will render vengeance, and recompense justice to his enemies, and will reward them that hate him; and the Lord shall purge the land of his people (kai ekkathariei Kyrios ten gen tou laou autou).” Deuteronomy 32:43 Brenton’s LXX
“Let all those be ashamed who serve graven images, Who boast of idols; Worship Him, all you gods!” Psalm 97:7
“Let all that worship graven images be ashamed, who boast of their idols; worship him, all you his angels.” Psalm 96:7 Brenton’s LXX
“Who is like Yahweh our God, The One who sits on high,” Psalm 113:5 LSB
“Who is as the Lord our God? who dwells in the high places (en hypselois),” Psalm 112:5 Brenton’s LXX
JESUS CHRIST
“… When He had by Himself purged our sins (di’ heatou katharismon ton hamartion poiesamenos hemon), He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high (en hypselois)… And again, when He brings the firstborn into the world, He says: ‘Let all the angels of God worship Him (kai proskynesatosan auto angeloi theou).’” Hebrews 1:3b, 6 Modern English Version (MEV)
Note how texts where YHWH is described as creating and sustaining all things, making atoning or purification for sins, being enthroned on high, and receiving the worship of all angels are all attributed to Jesus Christ. The implication of all this is that Jesus is YHWH Almighty Incarnate, being the Son who is the one true God of Israel who became a flesh and blood human being for the redemption of humanity:
“But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. He says, ‘I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.’ And again, ‘I will put my trust in him.’ And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.’
“Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.” Hebrews 2:9-18 New International Version (NIV)
I now turn my attention to the Holy Spirit.
YHWH
“Come, let us worship and bow down, Let us kneel before Yahweh our Maker. For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. Today, if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, As in the day of Massah in the wilderness, When your fathers tried Me, They tested Me, though they had seen My work. For forty years I loathed that generation, And said they are a people who wander in their heart, And they do not know My ways. Therefore I swore in My anger, They shall never enter into My rest.” Psalm 95:6-11
HOLY SPIRIT
“Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, ‘Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me, As in the day of trial in the wilderness, Where your fathers tried Me by testing Me, And saw My works for forty years. Therefore I was angry with this generation, And said, “They always go astray in their heart, And they did not know My ways”; As I swore in My wrath, “They shall not enter My rest.”’” Hebrews 3:7-11
YHWH
“‘But this is the covenant which I will cut with the house of Israel after those days,’ declares Yahweh: ‘I will put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. And they will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, “Know Yahweh,” for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares Yahweh, ‘for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.’” Jeremiah 31:33-34
“For finding fault with them, He says, ‘Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, When I will complete a new covenant With the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; Not like the covenant which I made with their fathers In the day when I took them by the hand To lead them out of the land of Egypt; For they did not continue in My covenant, And I did not care for them, says the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel After those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their minds, And upon their hearts I will write them. And I will be their God, And they shall be My people. And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen, And everyone his brother, saying, “Know the Lord,” For all will know Me, From the least to the greatest of them. For I will be merciful to their iniquities, And I will remember their sins no more.’” Hebrews 8:8-12
HOLY SPIRIT
“And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, ‘This is the covenant that I will make with them After those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws upon their heart, And on their mind I will write them,’ He then says, ‘And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.’” Hebrews 10:15-17
These examples from Hebrews identify the Holy Spirit as that very YHWH God who was speaking through the Psalmist and in the prophet Jeremiah. This shows that the Spirit is not an impersonal force, but is an uncreated, divine Person who shares the one infinite Being of God, which both the Father and the Son also share in and fully possess.
