The Mighty God Becomes Flesh!

In a remarkable prophecy found in Isaiah, God announced that a male Child would be born who would be the human incarnation of the Mighty God. This is the Child who sits enthroned over the kingdom of David forever and ever:

“But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in the land of the shadow of death, The light will shine on them… For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor (Pele Yo’etz), Mighty God (El Gibbor), Eternal Father (Abi Ad), Prince of Peace (Sar Shalom). There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of Yahweh of hosts will accomplish this.” Isaiah 9:1-2, 6-7

What makes this prophecy rather astonishing is that the Child bears the very same names and characteristics that Isaiah ascribes to YHWH elsewhere in his writing!

“Now it will be in that day, that the remnant of Israel and those of the house of Jacob who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel. A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God (El Gibbor).” Isaiah 10:20-21

“O Yahweh, You are my God; I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name; For You have worked wonders (Pele), Counsels (‘Esots) formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.” Isaiah 25:1

“The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace (Shalom Shalom) Because he trusts in You… Yahweh, You will establish peace (Shalom) for us, Since You have also performed for us all our works.” Isaiah 26:3, 12

“This also comes from Yahweh of hosts, Who has made His counsel (‘Esah) wonderful (Hipli) and His wisdom great.” Isaiah 28:29

“For thus says the One high and lifted up Who dwells forever (Ad), whose name is Holy, ‘I dwell on a high and holy place, And also with the crushed and lowly of spirit In order to revive the spirit of the lowly And to revive the heart of the crushed.’” Isaiah 57:15

“For You are our Father (Abinu), though Abraham does not know us And Israel does not recognize us. You, O Yahweh, are our Father (Abinu), Our Redeemer from everlasting is Your name.” Isaiah 63:16

“But now, O Yahweh, You are our Father (Abinu); We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand.’ Isaiah 64:8

Note that it is YHWH who is the Might God and the Father that dwells in eternity, whose counsels are wonderful, and the One that grants peace to his people.

The fact that these are the very same ascriptions of the male Child shows that he is more than human. This messianic Child must be the human incarnation, the very physical embodiment of God Almighty himself.

God’s Divine Angel becomes a Man

That’s not all.

The Greek version of the Hebrew Bible, known as the Septuagint (LXX), identifies the Christ Child as the Angel of great counsel or council:

“For a child is born to us, and a son is given to us, whose government is upon his shoulder, and his name is called the Messenger [Angel] of great counsel (megales Boules angelos), <Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Potentate, Prince of Peace, Father of the Age to come (thaumastos sumboulos, theos ischuros, exousiastes, archon eirenes, pater tou mellontos aionos)>: for I will bring peace upon the princes, and health to him.” LXX

This is the Angel of God who routinely appears throughout the OT as the visible YHWH, the God that appears to mankind in visible form (cf. Gen. 16:7-14; 28:10-22; 31:10-13; 32:24-30; 35:1, 7; 48:15-16; Exod. 3:1-6; 23:20-23; 33:1-3; Judges 2:1-5; 6:11-23; 13:3-24; Hosea 12:2-5).

In fact, the Angel’s description echoes the way the LXX depicts YHWH himself:

O [ever] living Lord! thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power, and with thy high and lofty arm: nothing can be hidden from thee. Granting mercy to thousands, and recompensing the sins of the fathers into the bosoms of their children after them: the great, the strong God; the Lord of great counsel (Kyrios megales Boules), and mighty in deeds, the great Almighty God, and Lord of great name: thine eyes are upon the ways of the children of men, to give to every one according to his way: who hast wrought signs and wonders in the land of Egypt even to this day, and in Israel, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and thou didst make for thyself a name, as at this day; and thou didst bring out thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, with a mighty hand, and with a high arm, and with great sights; and thou gavest them this land, which thou didst swear [to give] to their fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey; and they went in, and took it; but they hearkened not to thy voice, and walked not in thine ordinances; they did none of the things which thou didst command them, and they caused all these calamities to happen to them.” Jeremiah 39:19-23 LXX

This merely solidifies the point that the Angel of God is not a created agent, but is truly divine.

In other words, this is no ordinary Child!

What the Rabbis Know

Jewish sources acknowledge that the Child to be born is indeed the Messiah to come.

For example, the Aramaic paraphrase of Isaiah even goes so far as to employ the term Messiah in its rendering:

The prophet said to the house of David, For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and he has taken the law upon himself to keep it. His name is called from before Him who is wonderful in counsel, the mighty God who liveth to eternitythe Messiah whose peace shall be great upon us in his days. (Targum Jonathan on Isaiah 9:5)

NT Application

The New Testament itself either quotes or alludes to Isaiah 9 in reference to Jesus Christ being that male Child whom the prophet Isaiah spoke of:

“Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He departed into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth, He came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, in order that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, ‘The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a Light dawned.’ From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’” Matthew 4:12-17

“Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming in, he said to her, ‘Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.’ But she was very perplexed at this statement, and was pondering what kind of greeting this was. And the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and there will be no end of His kingdom.’ But Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?’ The angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.’” Luke 1:26-35

“And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying: ‘Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, For He visited and accomplished redemption for His people, And raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of David His servant—…Because of the tender mercy of our God, With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us, To shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To direct our feet into the way of peace.’” Luke 1:67-69, 78-79

This means that the NT authors believed that Jesus is the human incarnation of that very same Mighty God whom Isaiah foresaw becoming a human being.

In other words, the NT is proclaiming that Jesus is YHWH God Almighty who humbled himself to be born of a woman, even though he is not the Father or the Holy Spirit.

In the words of the holy Apostle Paul:

“concerning His Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, who was designated as the Son of God in power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,” Romans 1:3-4

“For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,” Romans 8:3

“whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.” Romans 9:5

“But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,” Galatians 4:4
