The Dog of Allah Revealed
The Quran in S. 53 mentions a star which sets:
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes). Your companion (Muhammad) has neither gone astray nor has erred. Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. S. 53:1-4 Hilali-Khan
According to the commentary (tafsir) of Al-Tabari, one meaning of the star is that it refers to Allah’s dog which he unleashes on the disbelievers:
Ibn ‘Abd al-A’la narrated to us: he said: Muhammad Ibn Thawr narrated to us, he said: Ma’mar narrated to us, from Qatadah:
The Prophet recited “By the star when it falls”, then a son of Abu Lahab – I think his name was ‘Utbah – said: “I disbelieve in the Lord of the star.” So the Prophet said: “Beware lest the dog of Allah devour you!” And it struck his head.
Ibn Tawus narrated from his father that the Prophet said” “Are you not afraid that Allah will unleash his dog upon you?”
So Ibn Abi Lahab went with some people on a journey. While on the road, they heard the roar of a lion. He said: “It is coming for me.”
His companions gathered around him and placed him in the middle of their circle. When they fell asleep, the lion came and snatched him from among them.
So according to the aforementioned narration, Allah’s dog is a lion which he sends out to devour his foes.
