The following is taken from Al-Jalal Al-Suyuti, The book "Al-Durr Al-Manthur fi Al-Tafsir bi Al-Ma'thur" (https://shamela.ws/book/12884/4650#p7).
Al-Suyuti quotes narrations with sound chains of transmitters, which testify that Satan inspired Muhammad to praise the three pagan goddesses of the Arabs. He also mentions a missing sentence that was once a part of Q. 22:52:
Abd Ibn Hamid and Ibn Al-Anbari narrated in Al-Masahif on the authority of Amr Ibn Dinar who said: Ibn Abbas used to recite (And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet or one who was inspired).
Ibn Abi Hatim narrated on the authority of Sa`d ibn Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, who said: “Among what God revealed was, ‘And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet, nor any inspired one.’ The word ‘inspired one’ was abrogated. The inspired ones were the companion of Ya-Sin and Luqman, who was from the family of Pharaoh, and the companion of Moses.”
Ibn al-Mundhir and Ibn Abi Hatim narrated on the authority of Mujahid who said: “Only the Prophet is spoken to and revelation is sent down to him, and he is not sent.”
And Abd ibn Humayd narrated, through al-Suddi, on the authority of Abu Salih, who said: The Messenger of Allah stood up, and the polytheists said: If he speaks well of our gods, we will speak well of his gods. Then Satan cast doubt into his hopes. “Have you considered al-Lat and al-Uzza and Manat, the third one?” (An-Najm 53:19). Indeed, they are among the exalted cranes, and their intercession is hoped for. He said: Then God revealed: {And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he recited [the revelation], Satan threw [some falsehood] into his recitation.}
Ibn Abbas said: His wish is that his people will embrace Islam.
Al-Bazzar, Al-Tabarani, Ibn Mardawayh, and Al-Diya’ in Al-Mukhtarah narrated with a chain of transmission WHOSE MEN ARE TRUSTWORTHY, on the authority of Sa’id ibn Jubayr, on the authority OF IBN ABBAS, who said: The Messenger of God recited: {Have you considered Al-Lat and Al-Uzza and Manat, the third, the other?} Those are the exalted cranes, and their intercession is hoped for. So the polytheists rejoiced at that and said: He has mentioned our gods.
Then Gabriel came to him and said: Recite to me what I have brought to you. So he recited: {Have you considered Al-Lat and Al-Uzza and Manat, the third?} The other ones are those exalted cranes, and their intercession is hoped for. He said: "I did not bring you this; this is from the devil." Then God revealed: {And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he recited [the revelation]} to the end of the verse.
Ibn Jarir, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Abi Hatim, and Ibn Mardawayh narrated with A SOUND CHAIN OF TRANSMISSION from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, who said: The Messenger of Allah recited Surah An-Najm in Mecca, and when he reached this verse: {Have you then considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza and Manat, the third - the other one?} , Satan placed on his tongue the words: "Those are the exalted cranes, and their intercession is hoped for." They said: "He never spoke well of our gods before today," so he prostrated himself and they prostrated themselves.
