MarYa Jesus: Aramaic Bible & Christ’s Deity
Table of Contents
The Aramaic Bible, commonly referred to as the Peshitta, employs a unique word MarYah, which some authorities believe is a compound phrase consisting of Aramaic Mar (“Lord”) and the shortened form of the Tetragrammaton or the divine name yod-heh-vav-heh, namely, Yah. If this is so then the term literally means "The Lord Yah," or "The Lord Jehovah."
What makes this all the more interesting is that the New Testament uses this phrase for the Lord Jesus himself. This means that the translators believed that Jesus Christ is YHWH God Almighty who became a human being.
In this post I will cite the places where the term is employed for Christ so that the readers can see this for themselves. The sources that I consulted to ensure that these texts do in fact call Jesus MarYa are the following:
The NT references cited here will be taken from Peshitta Holy Bible Translated. All emphasis will be mine.
“For this was he of whom it was said by Isaiah the Prophet, ‘A voice that cries in the desert, “Prepare the way of THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa) and level his paths”.’” Matthew 3:3
“But as the Pharisees were assembled, Yeshua asked them, And he said, ‘What are you saying about The Messiah? Whose Son is He?’ They were saying to him, ‘The Son of David.’ He said to them, ‘And how did David by The Spirit call him THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa), for he said: “THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa) said to my Lord (laMar), ‘sit at my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet’”? If therefore David called him THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa), how is he his son?’ And no man could give him an answer, and no man dared again from that day to question him.” Matthew 22:41-46
“For today, The Savior has been born to you, who is THE LORD JEHOVAH The Messiah (MarYa Meshikha), in the city of David.” Luke 2:11
“‘Men, brothers, it is permitted me to speak openly to you about the Chief Father, David, who died and also was buried, and his tomb is with us until today. For he was a Prophet, and he knew that God had sworn to him in an oath: “One from the fruit of your body I shall seat upon your throne.’ And he saw and spoke before about the resurrection of The Messiah, that he would not be left in Sheol, neither would his body see corruption. God has raised up this Yeshua, and we are all his witnesses.” He is The One who is exalted at the right hand of God and he has received from the Father The Promise which is concerning The Spirit of Holiness, and he has poured out this gift, which, behold, you are seeing and hearing.’
“‘For David had not ascended to Heaven, because he said, ‘THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa) said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand', Until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” Let therefore the whole house of Israel know truly, God (Alaha) has made this Yeshua, LORD JEHOVAH (d’MarYa) and The Messiah (Meshikha), whom you had crucified.’
“And when they heard these things. They were stricken in their hearts, and they said to Shimeon and to the rest of the Apostles, “What should we do, brothers?’ And Shimeon said to them, ‘Return to God and be immersed everyone of you, in the name of THE LORD JEHOVAH Yeshua (MarYa Eshu), for release from sin, so that you may receive the gift of The Spirit of Holiness.’” Acts 2:29-38
“But there was a disciple in Darmsuq and his name was Khanan-Yah and THE LORD JEHOVAH (wa’MarYa) had said to him in a vision, ‘Khanan-Yah’, and he said, ‘Behold, it is I, my Lord (Mar).’ And our Lord (wa’Maran) said to him, ‘Arise, go to the street which is called Straight and inquire at the house of Yehuda for Shaul, who is from the city Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. He sees in a vision a man whose name is Khanan-Yah entering and laying a hand upon him so that his eyes will be opened.’ And Khanan-Yah said, ‘My Lord (Mar), I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has inflicted on the Saints in Jerusalem. And behold, he also has authority here from The Chief Priests to imprison all those who call upon your name.’ And THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa) said to him, ‘Arise, go, because he is a chosen vessel to me to take my name to the Gentiles and Kings and among the children of Israel. For I shall show him how much he is going to suffer for my name.’ Then Khanan-Yah went to the house to him and laid a hand upon him and said to him, ‘Shaul, my brother, our Lord Yeshua (Maran Eshu) who appeared to you on the road, when you came, has sent me so that your eyes would be opened and you would be filled with The Spirit of Holiness.’” Acts 9:10-17
“And he went on to Jerusalem, and he wanted to join the disciples and they were all afraid of him and they did not believe that he was a disciple. But BarNaba took him and brought him to the Apostles and he related to them just how he had seen THE LORD JEHOVAH (la’MarYa) on the road and that he had spoken with him on the road, and how in Darmsuq he had spoken openly in the name of Yeshua.” Acts 9:26-27
“For the word which he sent to the children of Israel and announced good news of peace and tranquility to them by Yeshua The Messiah, (This One is LORD JEHOVAH of all (MarYa dakul)),” Acts 10:36
“And when Shila and Timotheos had come from Macedonia, Paulus was constrained in the word because the Jews were opposing him and blaspheming as he was testifying to them that Yeshua is The Messiah. And he shook his clothes and he said to them, “From now on I am clean; I myself go to the Gentiles.’ And he left there and entered the house of a man whose name was Titus, one who was a worshiper of God, and his house was joined to the synagogue. And Krispus, The Leader of the synagogue was trusting in Our Lord, he and all the children of his household, and many Corinthians were listening and were trusting in God and being baptized. And THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa) said in a vision to Paulus, ‘Do not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent, Because I am with you, and no man can harm you, and I have many people in the city.’ And he remained one year and six months in Corinthus and was teaching them the word of God.” Acts 18:5-11
“And if you will confess with your mouth our Lord Yeshua (baMaran Eshu), and you will believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall have life. For the heart that believes in him is made right, and the mouth that confesses him has life. For the Scriptures say, ‘Everyone who believes in him will be unashamed.’ And he makes no distinction in this, not for the Jews, neither for the Aramaeans, for he is The One LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa) to all of them, who is rich with everyone who calls to him. For everyone who will call the name of THE LORD JEHOVAH (d’MarYa) shall be saved.’” Romans 10:9-13
“For this purpose also The Messiah died and lived and arose, that he would be THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa) to the dead and to the living. But why are you judging your brother, or why do you even despise your brother? For all of us are going to stand before the judgment seat of The Messiah, According to what is written: ‘As I live, says THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa), every knee shall bow to me and to me every tongue shall swear.’ So then, every person among us gives an account of himself to God.’ From now on let us not judge one another, but determine this rather: ‘You shall not lay a stumbling block for your brother.’ For I know and I am persuaded by THE LORD JEHOVAH Yeshua (MarYa Eshu) that there is nothing that is defiled in his presence. But to the one who regards anything impure, it is impure to him alone.” Romans 14:9-14
“For I am not troubled over anything in myself, but I am not justified by this, for my judge is THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa). Therefore you should judge nothing before the time until THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa) will come, who shall illuminate the secrets of darkness and reveal the imaginations of the hearts, and then there shall be praise to each one from God.” 1 Corinthians 4:4-5
“To us, ours is one God The Father, for all things are from him and we are in him, and The One LORD JEHOVAH Yeshua The Messiah (MarYa Eshu Meshikha), for all things are by him, and we are also in his hand.” 1 Corinthians 8:6
“For I have received from our Lord (Maran) that thing which I handed to you, that our Lord Yeshua (d’Maran Eshu), in that night in which he was betrayed, took bread, And he blessed and he broke and he said, ‘Take eat; this is my body, which is broken for your persons; thus you shall do for my Memorial.’ So after they had dined, he also gave the cup, and he said, ‘This cup is The New Covenant in my blood. You shall be so doing every time that you drink for my Memorial.’ For every time that you eat this bread and you drink this cup, you commemorate the death of Our Lord (d’Maran), until his coming.
“Whoever therefore eats from the bread of THE LORD JEHOVAH (d’MarYa) and drinks from his cup and is unworthy of it, is guilty for the blood of THE LORD JEHOVAH (d’MarYa) and for his body. Because of this, let a man search his soul, and then eat of this bread and drink from this cup. For whoever eats and drinks from it being unworthy, eats and drinks a guilty verdict into his soul for not distinguishing the body of THE LORD JEHOVAH (d’MarYa). Because of this, many among you are ill and sickly and many are asleep. For if we would judge ourselves we would not be judged. But when we are judged by Our Lord (Maran), we are chastised so that we would not be condemned with the world.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-32
“Because I inform you of this: there is no man who speaks by The Spirit of God and says, ‘Yeshua is damned’, neither can a man say, ‘Yeshua is THE LORD JEHOVAH (d’MarYa hu Eshu)’, except by The Spirit of Holiness. But there are diversities of gifts, however The Spirit is One. And there are diversities of ministries, however, THE LORD JEHOVAH is One (had u MarYa). And there is a diversity of miracles, but God is One who works all in every person.” 1 Corinthians 12:3-6
“Thus also it is written: ‘Adam the first man was a living soul’; the last Adam - The Life Giver Spirit. But the first was not spiritual, but the animal, and then the spiritual. The first man was dust from the ground; The second man, THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa) from Heaven. Just as he who was a being of dust, so also is that which is of the dust, and just as he who is The Being from Heaven, so also is the Heavenly. And as we have worn the image of him who is from the dust, so we shall wear the image of him who is from Heaven.” 1 Corinthians 15:45-49
“Therefore, because we have this hope, we conduct ourselves publicly all the more. And not as Moses who had laid a veil over his face, so that the children of Israel would not gaze at the termination of that which was ceasing. But they were blinded in their understanding; for until today whenever the Old Testament is read, that veil remains over them, and it is not revealed that it is being abolished by The Messiah. And until today, whenever Moses is read, the veil is laid over their heart, And whenever anyone of them will be turned to THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa), the veil is taken away from him. But The Spirit is THE LORD JEHOVAH (MarYa den huyu Ruha), and wherever The Spirit of THE LORD JEHOVAH (d’Ruha d’MarYa) is, there is freedom. But we all see the glory of THE LORD JEHOVAH (d’MarYa) with unveiled faces, as in a mirror, and we are changed into the image from glory to glory, as from THE LORD JEHOVAH, THE SPIRIT (MarYa Ruha).” 2 Corinthians 3:12-18
Amazingly, Paul identifies both the Holy Spirit and Christ as MarYa!
There’s more:
“And reason in your souls this that also Yeshua The Messiah did: He who, while he was in the form of God (badmuṯa d’Alaha), did not esteem this as a prize, that he was the equal of God, But he stripped himself and took the form of a Servant and was in the form of the children of men, and was found in fashion as a man. And he humbled himself and was obedient unto death, even the death of being crucified. Because of this, God (Alaha) has also greatly exalted him and he has given him The Name which is greater than all names, That in The Name of Yeshua, every knee shall bow, which is in Heaven and in The Earth and which is under The Earth, And every tongue shall confess that Yeshua The Messiah is THE LORD JEHOVAH (d’MarYa w’Eshu Meshikha) to the glory of God his Father.” Philippians 2:5-11
“Servants, obey your Masters of the body in all things, not outwardly as those who please men, but with a pure heart and in the awe of THE LORD JEHOVAH (d’MarYa). And do all that you do with all your soul, as for Our Lord (d’alMaran), and not as for the children of men. And know that you will receive from our Lord (Maran) a reward in the inheritance, for you serve THE LORD JEHOVAH The Messiah (la’MarYa ger Meshikha palḥitton). But he pays the wrongdoer according to what he does wrong, and there is no favoritism.” Colossians 3:22-24
“But hallow THE LORD JEHOVAH The Messiah (la’MarYa Meshikha) in your hearts, and be ready to return a defense to everyone who requests a statement from you about the hope of your faith, in meekness and in reverence,” 1 Peter 3:15
“And when he testified these things, he said, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ ‘Come, LORD JEHOVAH Yeshua (ta MarYa Eshu).’ The grace of our Lord Yeshua The Messiah (d’Maran Eshu Meshikha) be with all of his Holy Ones. Amen.” Revelation 22:20-21
