Job’s Divine Redeemer Has Come!

The book of Job records the statements of one of Job’s interlocutors named Elihu who made some astute observations about the holiness and justice of God, and his righteous judgment upon sinners. Elihu surmised whether there is a figure qualified to act as a mediator who could provide a ransom to deliver sinners from God’s just punishment of sin:

“Indeed, God is greater than a human being. Why do you contend against him, that he will not answer all a person’s words? Indeed, God speaks in one way, even in two, yet someone does not perceive it. In a dream, a vision of the night, when a deep sleep falls on men slumbering on their bed, then he opens the ear of men, and he frightens them with a warning to turn human beings aside from their deeds, and he keeps man from pride.

He spares his life from the pit and his life from passing over the river of death. And he is reproved with pain on his bed, even with the strife of his bones continually, so that his life loathes bread, and his inner self loathes appetizing food. His flesh is wasted away from sight, and his bones, which are invisible, are bared. And he draws near to the pit and his life to the killers. If there is a messenger (malak) beside him, a mediator, one of a thousand, to declare to a human being his uprightness so that he is gracious to him, and he says, ‘Deliver him from descending into the pit; I have found a ransom.’

“His flesh is renewed with his youth; he returns to the days of his youthful strength. He prays to God, then he accepts him, and he sees his face with a shout of joy, and he repays to the human being his righteousness. He will sing to men, and he will say, ‘I have sinned and have perverted what is right,
and it was not paid back to me. He redeemed my life from going down into the pit, so I will enjoy the light.’ Look, God does all these things twice, three times with a person to bring his life back from the pit so that he may enjoy the light of life (ba'or ha'chayyim).” Job 33:12-30

The Holy Bible answers the question elsewhere by stating there is no mere creature, specifically no mere human being, that is capable of offering such a ransom for anyone. Only God is able to redeem persons from everlasting destruction by delivering them from the pit:

“Surely a man cannot redeem a brother. He cannot give to God his ransom (since the redemption price for their life is costly and it always fails), so that he may stay alive forever and not see the pit… Like sheep they are destined to Sheol; death will shepherd them. But the upright will rule over them in the morning, and their forms will be for Sheol to consume, far from his lofty abode. Surely God will ransom my life from the power of Sheol, because he will receive me. SelahPsalm 49:7-9, 15

Christ himself confirms this to be the case:

“And they were very astounded, saying to one another, ‘And who can be saved?’ Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With human beings it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.’” Mark 10:26-27

And yet both the Lord Jesus and his followers assert that Christ does what is humanly impossible to do, and which only God does, even though he is a Man!

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

“For there is one God and one mediator between God and human beings, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself a ransom for all, the testimony at the proper time,” 1 Timothy 2:5-6

Therefore, we either have a contradiction in the Bible, or Jesus is not a mere human being. Rather, Christ must be more than a Man and has to be fully God in essence, which is why he does what is humanly impossible. And this is precisely what the inspired Scriptures proclaim:

“who has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have the redemption, the forgiveness of sins, who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation, because all things in the heavens and on the earth were created by him, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers, all things were created through him and for him, and he himself IS before all things, and in him all things are held together, and he himself is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he himself may become first in everything, because he was well pleased for all the fullness to dwell in him, and through him to reconcile all things to himself, by making peace through the blood of his cross, through him, whether things on earth or things in heaven.” Colossians 1:13-20

“because in him all the fullness of deity dwells bodily,” Colossians 2:9

“looking forward to the blessed hope and the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us, in order that he might redeem us from all lawlessness and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good deeds.” Titus 2:13-14

“Simeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a faith equal in value to ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:1

“Although God spoke long ago in many parts and in many ways to the fathers by the prophets, in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the world, who is the radiance of his glory and the representation of his essence, sustaining all things by the word of power. When he had made purification for sins through him, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” Hebrews 1:1-3

“but concerning the Son, ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the scepter of righteous is the scepter of your kingdom.’… And, ‘You, Lord [the Son], laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the works of your hands; they will perish, but you continue, and they will all become old like a garment, and like a robe you will roll them up, and like a garment they will be changed; but you are the same, and your years will not run out.’” Hebrews 1:8, 10-12

The following words of Elihu further corroborate this point:

“God certainly does all these things two or three times to a person in order to turn him back from the Pit, so he may shine with the light of life.” Job 33:29-30 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

Not only does God save individuals from going down to the pit, God also is the source of spiritual illumination who grants life to those who repent. The Psalms teach this same truth:

“Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your judgments like the great deep. You save man and beast, O Yahweh. How precious is your loyal love, O God, and the children of humankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They are refreshed with the fullness of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.” Psalm 36:6-9

Note that YHWH is the fountain (i.e., source) of life and the God that illuminates individuals by/from his own light.

Astonishingly, these very traits and characteristics are attributed to Jesus Christ!

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This one was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and apart from him not one thing came into being that has come into being. In him was life, and the life was the light of humanity… The true light, who gives light to every person, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, and the world did not recognize him… And the Word became flesh and took up residence among us, and we saw his glory, glory as of the one and only from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:1-4, 9-10, 14

“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world! The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” John 8:12

“It is necessary for us to do the deeds of the one who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work! While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 9:4-5

“So Jesus said to them, ‘Yet a little time the light is with you! Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness does not overtake you! And the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, in order that you may become sons of light.’ Jesus said these things, and then he went away and was hidden from them.” John 12:35-36

“But Jesus cried out and said, ‘The one who believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me, and the one who sees me sees the one who sent me. I have come as a light into the world, in order that everyone who believes in me will not remain in the darkness.’” John 12:44-46

Note that Jesus is the human incarnation of the eternal Word of God, being the Agent of creation and the Source of life and spiritual illumination.

Seeing that Jesus is described as the One possessing life within himself and who is the light of life, he must thereby God Almighty in the flesh.

Therefore, the Mediator and Redeemer whom Elihu hoped for does indeed exist, and has revealed himself by entering into the world to become human. His name is Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the only Hope and Salvation of the entire creation:

"But I myself know that my redeemer is alive, and at the last he will stand up upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, but from my flesh I will see God, whom I will see for myself, and whom my eyes will see and not a stranger. My heart faints within me." Job 19:25-27

“And they were saying to the woman, ‘No longer because of what you said do we believe, for we ourselves have heard, and we know that this one is truly the Savior of the world!’” John 4:42

“Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’ Martha said to him, ‘I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’ Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die forever. Do you believe this?’ She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord, I have believed that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who comes into the world.” John 11:23-27

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6

“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among people by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

“The saying is trustworthy and worthy of all acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.” 1 Timothy 1:15

“My little children, I am writing these things to you in order that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one, and he is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” 1 John 2:1-2

“In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins… And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.” 1 John 4:14
