Jesus Christ: God, God’s Son, Or Both?

The inspired Scriptures describe Jesus as being both God and the Son of God in that he possesses the divine nature in all its fullness, due to his being the uniquely begotten Son of God.

The Uniquely Begotten Son

This helps us appreciate why in the NT Christ is the only One described as the monogenes of God, a term which denotes the absolutely unique aspect of his Sonship since there is no other son like him:

The Word became flesh and lived among us. We gazed on his glory, the kind of glory that belongs to the Father’s uniquely existing Son (monogenous), who is full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 International Standard Version (ISV)

“No one has ever seen God; but the only and unique Son (monogenes), who is identical with God and is at the Father’s side — he has made him known.” John 1:18 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only and unique Son (ton Hyion ton monogene), so that everyone who trusts in him may have eternal life, instead of being utterly destroyed. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but rather so that through him, the world might be saved. Those who trust in him are not judged; those who do not trust have been judged already, in that they have not trusted in the one who is God’s only and unique Son (tou monogenous Hyiou tou Theou).” John 3:16-18 CJB

“This is how God’s love was revealed among us: God sent his uniquely existing Son (ton Hyion autou ton monogene) into the world so that we might live through him. This is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” 1 John 4:9-10 ISV

The Father’s Uncreated Image and Agent of Creation

As the uniquely begotten Son, Jesus alone from among all the children of God is uncreated, equal to the Father in essence and glory, and the Agent whom the Father employed to create and sustain the entire creation:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (Theos). He was with God in the beginning. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing made had being. In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind… This was the true light, which gives light to everyone entering the world. He was in the world — the world came to be through him — yet the world did not know him.” John 1:1-4, 9-10 CJB

“For we must never forget that he rescued us from the power of darkness, and re-established us in the kingdom of his beloved Son, that is, in the kingdom of light. For it is by his Son alone that we have been redeemed and have had our sins forgiven.

“Now Christ is the visible expression of the invisible God. He existed before creation began, for it was through him that every thing was made, whether spiritual or material, seen or unseen. Through him, and for him, also, were created power and dominion, ownership and authority. In fact, every single thing was created through, and for him. He is both the first principle and the upholding principle of the whole scheme of creation.

“And now he is the head of the body which is composed of all Christian people. Life from nothing began through him, and life from the dead began through him, and he is, therefore, justly called the Lord of all. It was in him that the full nature of God chose to live, and through him God planned to reconcile in his own person, as it were, everything on earth and everything in Heaven by virtue of the sacrifice of the cross.” Colossians 1:13-20 Phillips New Testament (PHILLIPS)

“For the entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily in Christ,” Colossians 2:9 CSB

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” Hebrews 1:1-3 English Standard Version (ESV)

“But to the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God (ho theos), endures forever and ever. You rule with a scepter of justice. You love justice and hate evil. Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.’ He also says to the Son, ‘In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands. They will perish, but you remain forever. They will wear out like old clothing. You will fold them up like a cloak and discard them like old clothing. But you are always the same; you will live forever.” Hebrews 1:10-12 New Living Translation (NLT)

God’s Incomprehensible, Omniscient Son

Moreover, Jesus refers to himself as the incomprehensible Son whom only the Father is able to fully and truly know. He even claims to be omniscient by ascribing to himself the capacity to know the Father in the same way that the Father knows him:

“In that same hour, Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, and said, ‘I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.’ Turning to the disciples, he said, ‘All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is, except the Father, and who the Father is, except the Son, and he to whomever the Son desires to reveal him.’” Luke 10:21-22 – Cf. Matt. 11:25-27

This is a capacity that no finite creature possesses since God is beyond comprehension:

“He does great things past finding out; yes, marvelous things without number.” Job 9:10

“Can you fathom the mystery of God? Or can you probe the limits of the Almighty? They are high as heaven. What can you do? They are deeper than Sheol. What can you know? Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.” Job 11:7-9

“Behold, God is great, and we don’t know him. The number of his years is unsearchable.” Job 36:26

“After it a voice roars. He thunders with the voice of his majesty. He doesn’t hold back anything when his voice is heard. God thunders marvelously with his voice. He does great things, which we can’t comprehend.” Job 37:4-5

“For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me. You know my sitting down and my rising up. You perceive my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, Yahweh, you know it altogether. You hem me in behind and before. You laid your hand on me. This knowledge is beyond me. It’s lofty.” Psalm 139:1-6

“Great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised! His greatness is unsearchable.” Psalm 145:3

“‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways,’ says Yahweh. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.’” Isaiah 55:8-9

“Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?’ ‘Or who has first given to him, and it will be repaid to him again?’ For of him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory for ever! Amen.” Romans 11:33-36

Jesus has, therefore, made himself out to be God’s Son in such a way as to make himself equal to the Father in essence, power, glory and majesty.

These are some of the reasons that led the Jews to rightly conclude that Jesus wasn’t claiming to be God’s Son in the same sense that all the other Jews or the kings of Israel are said to be God’s children (Cf. Exod. 4:22-23; Deut. 14:1; 32:6-7, 18-21; 1 Chron. 17:10-14; 22:7-10; 28:4-6; Ps. 89:19-27; Isa. 63:16; 64:8; Jer. 31:9, 20; Hos. 1:10; 11:1).

They understood that Christ was identifying himself as the unique Son of God who is fully divine in the same sense that the Father is truly divine, which they viewed as blasphemy since they took him to be a mere human being.

I cite a few examples of the Jewish reaction to Jesus’ Sonship claims.

First Example

“For this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill him, because he did these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, ‘My Father is still working, so I am working, too.’ For this cause therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

“Jesus therefore answered them, ‘Most certainly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father doing. For whatever things he does, these the Son also does likewise. For the Father has affection for the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does. He will show him greater works than these, that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires. For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn’t honor the Son doesn’t honor the Father who sent him. Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and doesn’t come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

“‘Most certainly I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God’s voice; and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself. He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man. Don’t marvel at this, for the hour comes in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.’” John 5:16-29

The Jews correctly understood that Jesus was making himself equal to God by asserting the same divine authority to be continually working even on the sabbath, which was a prerogative belonging solely to God. Christ then goes on to reaffirm his essential coequality as well as his perfect, inseparable union with the Father by asserting that he only does and can do whatever the Father does in the exact same manner that the Father does something.

Remarkably, Jesus claims to do the things that only God Almighty can do, such as give immortal life and raise the dead both spiritually and physically just by the power of his voice! Jesus will also be the divine Judge who comes on the Judgment Day to determine the eternal destiny of every creature!

Nor is this the only instance where Jesus made such assertions:

“‘All those whom the Father gives me will come to me. He who comes to me I will in no way throw out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. This is the will of my Father who sent me, that of all he has given to me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day. This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.’

“The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, ‘I am the bread which came down out of heaven.’ They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, “I have come down out of heaven”?’ Therefore Jesus answered them, ‘Don’t murmur among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up in the last day… He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.’” John 6:37-44, 54

“Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’ Martha said to him, ‘I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’ Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.’” John 11:23-27

Christ affirms that he will be the One who will personally resurrect the dead at the last day, and grant his followers everlasting life since he himself is the Resurrection and the Life. I.e., Jesus in union with the Father (as well as the Holy Spirit [Cf. John 6:63; 2 Cor. 3:6]) is the divine Source of all life.

Therefore, Jesus as God’s unique Son does the very things which the Hebrew Bible ascribes to YHWH alone:

“There is no one as holy as Yahweh, for there is no one besides you, nor is there any rock like our God… Yahweh kills and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol and brings up.” 1 Samuel 2:2, 6

Second Example

“‘My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father who has given them to me is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are (esmen) one.’ Therefore the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, ‘I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of those works do you stone me?’ The Jews answered him, ‘We don’t stone you for a good work, but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.’” John 10:27-33

The reason why the Jews correctly inferred that Jesus made himself out to be God, even though he is both a Man who is not the Father, is because Christ ascribed to himself the very functions and characteristics that the Hebrew Bible attributes solely to YHWH!

“For Yahweh is a great God And a great King above all gods, In whose hand are the depths of the earth, The peaks of the mountains are His also. The sea is His, for it was He who made it, And His hands formed the dry land. Come, let us worship and bow down, Let us kneel before Yahweh our Maker. For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. Today, if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, As in the day of Massah in the wilderness,” Psalm 95:3-8 Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)

“See now that I myself am he. There is no god with me. I kill and I make alive. I wound and I heal. There is no one who can deliver out of my hand.” Deuteronomy 32:39

“Yes, since the day was, I am he. There is no one who can deliver out of my hand. I will work, and who can hinder it?” Isaiah 43:13

Compare the similarities between YHWH and Jesus:

Like YHWH, Jesus is the Shepherd who has the sheep in his hand, meaning under his control and protection.

Like YHWH, Jesus is the Shepherd whose voice the flock are to hear and obey.

Like YHWH, Jesus gives life, in fact everlasting life.

Like YHWH, no one is able to deliver or pluck out of Jesus’ hand, meaning from his sovereign power and control.

The reason is because Jesus is YHWH God who became a Man, being personally distinct from and yet identical to the Father in essence.

The Jews' only mistake was in their assumption that Christ was a mere human being, and therefore blaspheming for making himself out to be God in the flesh.

Third Example

It was on the basis of such claims that the Jewish leaders condemned Jesus to death, and sought out the Romans to execute him since they had no legal right to kill him themselves:

“The high priest stood up in the middle, and asked Jesus, ‘Have you no answer? What is it which these testify against you?’ But he stayed quiet, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?’ Jesus said, ‘I am. You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of the sky.’ The high priest tore his clothes and said, ‘What further need have we of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?’ They all condemned him to be worthy of death.” Mark 14:60-64

“Pilate therefore said to them, ‘Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.’ Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is illegal for us to put anyone to death,’” John 18:31

“The Jews answered him, ‘We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.’” John 19:7

In confirming his unique relationship to God, Christ identifies himself as that very same divine figure whom the prophet Daniel saw being worshiped by all nations forever,

“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.” Daniel 7:13-14 New International Version (NIV)

And whom David worshiped as the Lord who forever sits enthroned alongside YHWH his Father:

“A psalm of David. The Lord says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand until I have made your enemies a footstool for you.’ The Lord will stretch forth from Zion your scepter of power. The Lord says: ‘Rule in the midst of your enemies! Yours is royal dignity in the day of your birth; in holy splendor, before the daystar, like the dew, I have begotten you.” Psalm 110:1-3 New Catholic Bible (NCB)

Jesus’ statements reaffirm that he wasn’t making himself out to be God’s Son in the same way that Israel or Israel’s other kings are said to be the children of God. Jesus was most definitely identifying himself as the unique, divine Son of God who is equal to the Father in essence, glory, dominion and majesty, a claim which his Jewish opponents vehemently rejected. Hence, the charge of blasphemy.

In other words, Jesus was claiming to be the Son of God the Father who is fully God in nature. After all, to be the son of someone or something is to possess the very nature, essence and characteristics of the individual or thing from which or whom one is begotten. Jesus himself said:

“Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.’” John 3:5-6 NIV

As such, Christ is God the Son, being both the Son of God and God at the same time (even though he is not the Father or the Holy Spirit).
