JEROME, TRADTION & APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION
Table of Contents
Here’s what St. Jerome wrote to the Luciferians in respect to the authority of unwritten traditions and apostolic succession in proving and preserving Christian doctrines and the correct meaning of Scripture. All emphasis will be mine:
8. L. Thirsty men in their dreams eagerly gulp down the water of the stream, and the more they drink the thirstier they are.
In the same way you appear to me to have searched everywhere for arguments against the point I raised, and yet to be as far as ever from being satisfied.
Don’t you know that the laying on of hands after baptism and then the invocation of the Holy Spirit is a custom of the Churches?
Do you demand Scripture proof? You may find it in the Acts of the Apostles.
And even if it did not rest on the authority of Scripture the consensus of the whole world in this respect would have the force of a command. For many other observances of the Churches, which are due to tradition, have acquired the authority of the written law, as for instance the practice of dipping the head three times in the laver, and then, after leaving the water, of tasting mingled milk and honey in representation of infancy; and, again, the practices of standing up in worship on the Lord’s day, and ceasing from fasting every Pentecost; and there are many other unwritten practices which have won their place through reason and custom.
So you see we follow the practice of the Church, although it may be clear that a person was baptized before the Spirit was invoked…
28. I might spend the day in speaking to the same effect, and dry up all the streams of argument with the single Sun of the Church.
But as we have already had a long discussion and the protracted controversy has wearied out the attention of our audience, I will tell you my opinion briefly and without reserve.
We ought to remain in that Church which was founded by the Apostles and continues to this day.
If ever you hear of any that are called Christians taking their name not from the Lord Jesus Christ, but from some other, for instance, Marcionites, Valentinians, Men of the mountain or the plain, you may be sure that you have there not the Church of Christ, but the synagogue of Antichrist.
For the fact that they took their rise after the foundation of the Church is proof that they are those whose coming the Apostle foretold.
And let them not flatter themselves if they think they have Scripture authority for their assertions, since the devil himself quoted Scripture, and the essence of the Scriptures is not the letter, but the meaning.
Otherwise, if we follow the letter, we too can concoct a new dogma and assert that such persons as wear shoes and have two coats must not be received into the Church. (The Dialogue Against the Luciferians)
