Concealing What They Don’t Have?

O Children of Israel! Remember My favour wherewith I favoured you, and fulfil your (part of the) covenant, I shall fulfil My (part of the) covenant, and fear Me. And believe in that which I reveal, confirming that which ye possess already (of the Scripture), and be not first to disbelieve therein, and part not with My revelations for a trifling price, and keep your duty unto Me. Confound not truth with falsehood, nor knowingly conceal the truth. Establish worship, pay the poor-due, and bow your heads with those who bow (in worship). Enjoin ye righteousness upon mankind while ye yourselves forget (to practise it)? And ye are readers of the Scripture! Have ye then no sense? S. 2:40-44 Pickthall

Can ye (o ye men of Faith) entertain the hope that they will believe in you? – Seeing that a party of them heard the Word of God, and perverted it knowingly after they understood it. Behold! when they meet the men of Faith, they say: "We believe": But when they meet each other in private, they say: "Shall you tell them what God hath revealed to you, that they may engage you in argument about it before your Lord?" - Do ye not understand (their aim)? Know they not that God knoweth what they conceal and what they reveal? Are they then unaware that Allah knoweth that which they keep hidden and that which they proclaim? S. 2:75-77 Y. Ali

And when there cometh unto them a scripture from Allah, confirming that in their possession - though before that they were asking for a signal triumph over those who disbelieved - and when there cometh unto them that which they know (to be the truth) they disbelieve therein. The curse of Allah is on disbelievers. Evil is that for which they sell their souls: that they should disbelieve in that which Allah hath revealed, grudging that Allah should reveal of His bounty unto whom He will of His slaves. They have incurred anger upon anger. For disbelievers is a shameful doom. S. 2:89-90 Pickthall

Or say ye that Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes were Jews or Christians? Say: Do ye know best, or doth Allah? And who is more unjust than he who hideth a testimony which he hath received from Allah? Allah is not unaware of what ye do. S. 2:140 Pickthall

Those unto whom We gave the Scripture recognise (this revelation) as they recognise their sons. But lo! a party of them knowingly conceal the truth. S. 2:146 Pickthall

Surely those who conceal the clear proofs and the guidance that We revealed after We made it clear in the Book for men, these it is whom Allah shall curse, and those who curse shall curse them (too). S. 2:159 Shakir

Surely those who conceal any part of the Book that Allah has revealed and take for it a small price, they eat nothing but fire into their bellies, and Allah will not speak to them on the day of resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they shall have a painful chastisement. S. 2:174 Shakir

A party of the People of the Scripture long to make you go astray; and they make none to go astray except themselves, but they perceive not. O People of the Scripture! Why disbelieve ye in the revelations of Allah, when ye (yourselves) bear witness (to their truth)? S. 3:69-70 Pickthall

There is among them a section who distort the Book with their tongues: (As they read) you would think it is a part of the Book, but it is no part of the Book; and they say, "That is from God," but it is not from God: It is they who tell a lie against God, and (well) they know it! It is not (possible) that a man, to whom is given the Book, and Wisdom, and the prophetic office, should say to people: "Be ye my worshippers rather than God's": on the contrary (He would say) "Be ye worshippers of Him Who is truly the Cherisher of all: For ye have taught the Book and ye have studied it earnestly."… Behold! God took the covenant of the prophets, saying: "I give you a Book and Wisdom; then comes to you an apostle, confirming what is with you; do ye believe in him and render him help." God said: "Do ye agree, and take this my Covenant as binding on you?" They said: "We agree." He said: "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses." S. 3:78-79, 81 Y. Ali

All food was lawful unto the Children of Israel, save that which Israel forbade himself, (in days) before the Torah was revealed. Say: Produce the Torah and read it (unto us) if ye are truthful. And whoever shall invent a falsehood after that concerning Allah, such will be wrong-doers. S. 3:93-94

And (remember) when Allah laid a charge on those who had received the Scripture (He said): Ye are to expound it to mankind and not to hide it. But they flung it behind their backs and bought thereby a little gain. Verily evil is that which they have gained thereby. S. 3:187 Pickthall

They are those whom We gave Al-Kitab, and Al-Hukm and An-Nubuwwah. So if these folk (i.e., the members of your nation) disbelieve in this (permanent Message and eternal Al-Kitab), then, indeed We have (in Our scheme) entrusted it to a nation who are not, to it, in line with the disbelievers. They (i.e., all the Prophets mentioned in the above narration) are those whom Allah has guided (to the Permanent Path).

So you (o Muhammad) follow (and adopt) their guidance. Say: “I do not ask you a reward over it (as I propagate Al-Kitab as a mission and as a duty). It is not but Zikrah-lil-Alamin. And they did not estimate Allah with an estimation due to Him when they said: “Allah has not delivered to a human being any thing (as an Instruction Manual).”

Say: “Who delivered Al-Kitab with which approached Musa — (which acts as) a Light and Guidance to Mankind? You people have broken it into separate papersheets — you make evident (some of) it and you hide a major portion (thereof). And you were taught (through it) what you knew not — (neither) you and nor your fathers.” (Now in reply to the question put up by you), say: “Allah (delivered Al-Kitab to Musa)!” Then leave them, they will play and amuse through their vain discussion.

And this Book which We have sent is a Blessed one — one which confirms as true what is in between its two hands (i.e., already there) and so that you may warn Ummul Qurah and whoever is around it. And those who Believe in the Hereafter Believe in this (Al-Kitab), and they guard over their Salat. S. 6:89-92 Dr. Kamal Omar

Those who follow the Apostle-Prophet, the Ummi, whom they find written down with them in the Taurat and the Injeel (who) enjoins them good and forbids them evil, and makes lawful to them the good things and makes unlawful to them impure things, and removes from them their burden and the shackles which were upon them; so (as for) those who believe in him and honor him and help him, and follow the light which has been sent down with him, these it is that are the successful. Say: O people! surely I am the Apostle of Allah to you all, of Him Whose is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth there is no god but He; He brings to life and causes to die therefore believe in Allah and His apostle, the Ummi Prophet who believes in Allah and His words, and follow him so that you may walk in the right way. And of Musa's people was a party who guided (people) with the truth, and thereby did they do justice. S. 7:157-159 Shakir

We certainly gave the Book to Moses, but differences arose therein: had it not been that a word had gone forth before from thy Lord, the matter would have been decided between them, but they are in suspicious doubt concerning it. S. 11:110 Y. Ali
