Muhammad is alleged to have said that only a hypocrite would hate his paternal first cousin and son-in-law Ali ibn Abu Talib:

(21) Chapter [Regarding Feelings Towards 'Ali]

Narrated 'Ali:

"The Prophet - the Unlettered Prophet - exhorted me (saying): 'None loves you except a believer and none hates you except a hypocrite.'" 'Adi bin Thabit (a narrator) said: "I am from the generation whom the Prophet supplicated for."

Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)

Herein lies the dilemma for the Sunnis.

According to their sound traditions, Muhammad’s child bride Aisha hated Ali so much that she refused to mention his name or say anything good about him:

Salih b. Abdul-Aziz b. Muhammad ash-Sheikh said:

And Aisha, the daughter of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq and the wife of the Prophet, joined them and she was sick of Ali, because he mentioned divorcing her from the Prophet to divorce her after the scandal incident. (ONLINE SOURCE)

10 Call to Prayers (Adhaan)

(39) Chapter: The limit set for a patient to attend the congregational Salat (prayer)?

Narrated `Aisha: “When the Prophet became seriously ill and his disease became aggravated he asked for permission from his wives to be nursed in my house and he was allowed. He came out with the help of two men and his legs were dragging on the ground. He was between Al-`Abbas and another man.”

‘Ubaidullah said, “I told Ibn `Abbas what `Aisha had narrated and he said, ‘Do you know who was the (second) man whose name `Aisha did not mention?‘ I said, ‘No.’ Ibn `Abbas said, ‘He was `Ali Ibn Abi Talib.'”

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, in his commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, wrote:

قوله : قال: هو علي بن أبيطالب .زاد الإسماعيلي: من رواية عبد الرزاق ، عن معمر ولكن عائشة لا تطيبنفساً له بخير ولإبن إسحاق في المغازي ، عن الزهريولكنها لا تقدر على أن تذكره بخير.

His saying: He said: He is Ali b. Abi Talib.

A-Ismaeli added: from Abdulrazaq’s narrations, from Muammar, “but Aisha herself was not kind/good to him,” and Ibn Ishaaq in al-Maghazi, narrated from az-Zuhri that, “but she didn’t possess the ability to mention him in a good way.” (Ibn Hajar, Fathul-bari [Tahqiq: Muhibbuddin al-Khatib, Dar al-Marifah, Beirut], volume 2, p. 156)

Ahmad b. Hanbal narrated this riwayah in his Musnad, and in the end wrote:

وَلَكِنَّ عَائِشَةَ لاَ تَطِيبُ له نَفْساً.

But she is averse to name him in a good context. (Musnad Ahmad bin Hanbal, volume 6, p. 228, No. 25956)

Aisha even waged war against Ali, resulting in the slaughter of thousands of Muslims:

The first movement of opposition to 'Ali was led by a widow of the Prophet, the still relatively young and vigorous 'A'ishah, and two prominent Companions of the Prophet, Talhah and al-Zubayr. They left the Hijaz and went to the garrison town of al -Basrah in Iraq, where they raised an army to fight 'Ali. He followed them to Iraq but went to the other garrison town there, al-Kufah, which supplied most of the forces with which he would oppose the triumvirate. At the end of 656 the two sides met in battle near al-Basrah, known in tradition as the Battle of the Camel, and the result was an overwhelming victory for 'All. Talhah and al-Zubayr were killed in the fighting and its aftermath, and 'A'ishah was made captive and sent back to Medina. 'All remained in al-Kufah, which was his base for the remaining years of his life and a center for pro-'Alid movements of all sorts for the next century or so.

At that point, having apparently secured his position, 'All was confronted by another enemy, the governor of Syria and close relative of the murdered 'Uthman, Mu'awiyah b. Abi Sufyan. Mu'awiyah, whose criticisms of 'Ali also centered on the wrongful murder of 'Uthman and included the demand that 'Ali hand over the killers for vengeance, was supported by 'Amr b. al-'As. 'Amr had commanded the armies that had seized Egypt for the Arabs from the Byzantines and had been that country's first Arab governor. In the tradition he appears very much as Mu'awiya’s right-hand man, one might say his evil genius. (The History of al-Tabari: The First Civil War, translated by G. R. Hawting [State University of New York Press [SUNY], Albany, NY, 1996] Volume XVII, p. xii; emphasis mine)

635. 'A'ishah, the widow of the Prophet, although an opponent of 'AIi, was a half-sister of Muhammad b. AN Bakr. (Ibid., p. 158; emphasis mine)

To make matters worse, when Aisha received news that Ali had been murdered she was actually quite happy!

When news of 'Ali's death reached 'A'ishah 898 she said:

And she threw down her staff and settled upon her place of abode, like the traveler happy to return home899

She asked who had killed him and, when told that it was a man of Muri d, she said:

Even though he was far away, there has announced his death a young man (ghulam) in whose mouth there was no dust.900

Zaynab, the daughter of Aba Salamah901 said, "Are you saying this about 'Ali?" and 'A'ishah replied, "I am forgetful, and, if I forget, remind me”902 He who brought tidings of 'Ali's death was Sufyan b. 'Abd Shams b. Abi Waqqas al-Zuhri.903

898. The widow of the Prophet, and the opponent of 'Ali at the Camel.

899. Ann., A.H. 40 §32, says that the verse is proverbial and is cited to indicate pleasure at something good.

900. That is, he told the truth.

901. See nn. 812, 813, above.

902. The words of A'ishah are obscure in meaning possibly ironic.

903. That is, the nephew of Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas (see n. 422, above). (Ibid., pp. 224-225: https://static.wixstatic.com/media/436d7d_b99f353f3d104978ad5c9da244ebf15f~mv2.webp; bold emphasis mine)

Other reports of Aisha rejoicing over Ali’s death include:

حدثني محمد بن الحسين الأشناني، قال: حدثنا أحمد بن حازم، قال: حدثنا عاصم بن عامر، وعثمان بن أبي شيبة، قالا: حدثنا جرير، عن الأعمش، عن عمرو بن مرة، عن أبي البختري، قال:لما أن جاء عائشة قتل علي عليه السلام سجدت.

Narrated to us Muhammad b. Hussein al-Ashnani – narrated to us Ahmad b. Hazem, narrated to us Aseem b. Ameer and Uthman b. Abi Shaybah, narrated to us Jarir, from Amash, from Amr b. Murrah, from Abu Bukhtari that he said:

When the news of Ali’s death reached Aisha, whereupon she prostrated (to thank God.). (Abul-Faraj al-Isfahani, Maqatil al-Talibiyyin, volume 1, p.11)

And:

Sufyan b. Uyaynah brought the news of Ali’s death to Hijaz. When Ayesha (was informed about the murder of Ali, she said:

“she threw down her staff and settled upon her place of abode, like the traveller happy to return home”. (Muhammad b. Sa’ad b. Mani Abu Abdullah al-Basri az-Zuhree, Tabaqatul-Kubra [Dar Sader, Beirut], volume 3, p. 40)

In light of these traditions, this means that Aisha stands condemned by the words of her own husband who said that only a hypocrite would hate and oppose Ali.
